Last Friday, the Georgia College & State University Women's Tennis team (6-1) played at home against Texas A&M-Kingsville following a series of away games.
Sofia Shing and Shradha Chhabra, with a team-best 5-1 doubles record, started the match for the Bobcats, winning 6-2 on the third line over Sterre Fleur Moerdijk and Milou Ter Morsche. Next, Suwanee’s Emma Fleming and Chiara Santoro, of Spain, clinched the doubles point for the Bobcats, winning 6-4 over opponents Manuela Turolo and Raina Zaffar.
On the second line, Jada Young from South Carolina and Ashton Morrison from Cumming, fought hard but fell 6-4 to Alessa Maier and Annika Andersson.
In singles play, Young bounced back and defeated Moerdijk 6-1 and 6-2, while Fleming followed on the third line, beating Zaffar 6-1, 6-2 to put the Bobcats on the verge of victory. Shing secured the team win for the Bobcats on the first line by dominating Maier 6-4, 6-2. Morrison played a three-set match against Ter Morsche on the fifth line and won 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.
Meanwhile, Santoro secured another point for the Bobcats with a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Turolo. Chhabra closed things out with a hard-fought three-set victory against Andersson on the sixth line, winning 5-7, 6-1, 10-5, to secure the sweep for the Bobcats over Texas A&M-Kingsville.
On Sunday, GCSU women’s tennis secured another win at the University of Montevallo (0-3) going 4-3 in their matchup with Montevallo at Columbus State University.
Although the Falcons won the doubles point with victories in the first and second slots, GCSU's third doubles pair of Shing and Chhabra battled hard and clinched a 7-6 win over Eva Dirr and Erika Friere, bringing their season record to 6-1.
In the first doubles, Fleming and Santoro lost to Mireia Turro and Cyba Ozzor 6-4, while in the second doubles, Ashton Morrison and Young were defeated by Emily Hafner and Lieselotte Hartlöhner with a score of 6-2.
The Bobcats evened the score with the first singles match as Young won over Ozzor with 6-3 sets on the second line. GCSU then took the lead when Santoro defeated Dirr 6-4, 6-2 in the fourth singles, followed by Chhabra's 7-5, 6-2 win over London Breedlove, putting the Bobcats one point away from victory. Young's record is now 3-3, while Santoro remains unbeaten at 7-0, and Chhabra's record stands at 5-2.
Fleming secured the win for the Bobcats in the third singles match, staying perfect on the season by beating Hafner 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. With this win, Fleming's record for the season is now 6-0.
