Bill Young
He was a man with a thick New Jersey accent coaching in the Deep South.
Regardless, Bill Young was able to form deep bonds with many of his players during his eight years as head coach of Baldwin High’s football program.
Young, 73, passed away peacefully in Milledgeville on Sept. 10, surrounded by friends and family.
Visitation is set for noon Saturday at Williams Funeral Home, with a celebration of life to follow at 1 p.m.
Young led the Braves’ program from 1990-98, back when Baldwin football games were played on Irwin Street, across from Bonner Park.
The highlight of Young’s tenure came in 1993 when the Braves upset Northside-Warner Robins in the region playoffs before ultimately advancing the quarterfinals in GHSA Class AAAA, which was the largest classification in Georgia at the time.
Young is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 52 years, Karen Young, as well as his daughter, Carissa, a former BHS basketball player, son Matthew Young, as well as five grandchildren and a host of other family members.
