The truth and impact of Mayor Mary Parham-Copelan

Dear editor,

Listen, I won’t let fictional attacks distract from what truly matters — Mayor Mary Parham-Copelan’s leadership, her record, and her vision for Milledgeville.

It’s true that Parham-Copelan’s had bankruptcy filings in the past, mostly before she ever ran for mayor. But those were personal challenges, not reflections of how she has led our city.

What concerns me even more is the timing.

Why bring up old paperwork less than two weeks before an election? That’s not journalism — it’s political theater.

Let’s have some perspective: Even public figures have used bankruptcy laws as a tool. President Donald Trump’s companies have filed for business bankruptcy four times.

And history shows that great leaders have weathered financial difficulty and gone on to transform their communities.

President Abraham Lincoln, for example, once declared business bankruptcy before rising to national leadership.

But this isn’t about comparing past errors. It’s about what’s happening today. Under Parham-Copelan’s stewardship, we have seen stronger neighborhoods, better services, smart investments, and accountability.

I stand firmly by the principle I’ve long championed: “Leaders solve problems, not create them.” That’s exactly what Mayor Parham-Copelan does every day.

Voters deserve to make a decision based on action, not smears. So I ask you to look at her record, not rumors. Judge her by what she’s done, not what her past challenges were.

And when you vote — I hope you’ll stand with Mayor Mary Parham-Copelan, a leader who has proven she can solve problems, lead with vision, and move Milledgeville forward.

Sincerely, Floyd Griffin Georgia State Representative District 149
