CRIME WATCH

Pair caught shoplifting; only one identified

On July 18, law enforcement was dispatched to Dollar General, at 2110 N. Jefferson St., in reference to a shoplifting incident on July 17. Two males, one identified as Dontavious Anderson and the other unknown, stole approximately $210 worth of household items.

A manager stated they were able to do this by having the unknown person cause a distraction to the cashier, while Anderson was able to collect the items and leave through the front of the store, bypassing the checkout counter entirely. An officer reviewed CCTV footage of the incident and through prior dealings with him, positively identified Dontavious Anderson as one of the males.

Anderson had been hand delivered a trespass notice from the store on March 5. Warrants for felony theft by shoplifting, due to his criminal history, and criminal trespass were secured on Anderson. Charges are pending on the unknown subject pending identification.

Passenger busted with drugs during traffic stop

On July 18, law enforcement observed a black Chevrolet C-10 stop at the red light on Kings Road at the intersection with Highway 22 with no working headlights, and an off road light bar illuminated in the front of the vehicle.

The officer initiated a traffic stop on the driver, identified as Arnold Rubert, who stated his headlights were flashing on and off, so he had the off road light bar on. The passenger, later identified as Andrew Jordan, was not wearing his seat belt, so the officer requested his identification. Jordan stated he did not have any identification on his person.

The officer cleared Rubert and Jordan through GCIC/NCIC and observed an outstanding warrant through Department of Homeland Security Immigration for Malek Jordan, with a picture matching the passenger. This led the officer to believe Jordan had given them a false name and date of birth, so he was taken into custody. A search of Jordan’s person revealed a gray sock containing several items hidden in his pants. Further investigation of the contents of the sock yielded a brown tar-like substance believed to be heroin wrapped tightly in a piece of aluminum foil. The officer also located a clear bag containing a quantity of a crystal like substance suspected to be methamphetamine and an Advil tube with suspected methamphetamine. Also located in the sock was a clear bag containing numerous pills of various colors and shapes, which the officer believed to be MDMA (ecstasy). Rubert was given a verbal warning for the usage of the off road light bar, and was informed to get his headlights fixed. Jordan was transported to the jail without incident. However, while looking through the GCIC/NCIC returns, the officer realized Jordan was not Malek Jordan.

The warrant was populated on their vehicle with Jordan's photo. Warrants for possession of schedule I controlled substance (two counts) and possession of methamphetamine were secured against Jordan.

Drunk driver taken into custody at crash site

On July 20, law enforcement was dispatched to the 300 block of Allen Memorial Drive in reference to a vehicle crash. The vehicle was traveling west on Allen Memorial Drive and failed to maintain the proper lane of travel, crossed the double yellow line, and entered the westbound lane of travel.

It traveled onto the south shoulder of the roadway while rotating counter clockwise before striking a ditch and becoming overturned. The driver, Norris Dumas, of the crashed vehicle smelled of an unknown alcoholic beverage and admitted to consuming a few beers and some wine around an hour and a half before the crash. The officer could not perform a standardized field sobriety due to Dumas having minor injuries. Dumas consented to the state administered blood test and was treated by EMS.
