On July 11, while patrolling the area of Irwinton Road and Broad Street in search of a potentially stolen 2007 Saturn Ion, an officer spotted the driver turn into the driveway of 2130 Irwinton Rd. with the vehicle’s parking lights illuminated. The officer confirmed the identity of the vehicle and moments later, the vehicle exited the driveway, and the driver, later identified as Stanley Williams, turned north onto Irwinton Road. Two officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop but Williams turned right onto Helen Lane and accelerated rapidly. The driver reached a speed of 57 miles per hour in the posted 25 mile per hour speed zone. Williams turned into the driveway of 104 Park Dr. and drove behind the residence, striking a concrete slab. He fled on foot through nearby yards and onto Lake Drive. Officers lost sight of him as he ran through the yard of 121 Lake Dr. and entered a dense wooded area behind the residence. The vehicle was released to its registered owner. The owner advised that the vehicle could not be reported stolen, as it was marital property. Warrants for felony fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement, driving with a suspended driver’s license, and driving on the wrong side of the road were obtained for Williams.

Driver and passenger arrested at safety road check

On July 11, an officer was conducting a safety road check at Ivey Drive and Hillcrest Drive and made contact with driver Alton Jerome Waller and passenger Annette Henry. Waller stated that he had lost his driver’s license last week and initially gave the officer a fake name.

Waller could not provide any documents with identification but the officer was able to identify him using his last name in GCIC. Waller had an outstanding warrant for a parole violation. The GCIC check also revealed that Waller’s Georgia driver’s license was suspended. After speaking to Henry, the officer asked for consent to search the vehicle to ensure there was nothing illegal inside before she took possession of the vehicle. Henry gave consent to search the vehicle. During the search, the officer located a red zip bag with a white powder substance and small white crystallized rocks believed to be crack cocaine on the passenger side.

Henry stated that the bag belonged to her and the substance inside the bag was crack cocaine. Waller received a uniform traffic citation for driving while license suspended and one warrant was secured for giving false name and date of birth to law enforcement. A warrant for possession of cocaine was secured for Henry.

Drunk driver exceeds 100 mph on Vinson Highway

On July 12, while on patrol near Bell Avenue and Vinson Highway, an officer observed a vehicle traveling south on Vinson Highway at speeds of approximately 65 miles per hour in a posted 40 mph speed zone. The officer pulled out behind the vehicle and observed the driver cross over the middle yellow line. To catch up to the vehicle, the officer was driving in excess of 70 mph. When attempting to initiate a traffic stop, the driver accelerated up to 115 mph in a posted 50 mph zone on Vinson Highway. The driver turned right onto the Fall Line Freeway (State Route 540) and continued traveling west on the Fall Line Freeway, after passing the turn off for State Route 112.

The driver then drove over the median and began traveling east on the Fall Line Freeway before making a right turn onto State Route 112. The officer momentarily lost sight of the vehicle at this time but regained sight of the vehicle as it made a right turn onto Jessie Scott Road. The driver finally stopped the vehicle in the middle of Jessie Scott Road.

The officer gave verbal commands to the driver, identified as Dylan MacDonald, to exit his vehicle.

MacDonald got out of the vehicle and got onto his hands and knees, but did not follow the command to get down on the ground. MacDonald later admitted to drinking after being taken into custody.

He had extremely slurred speech and could not walk without officer assistance. MacDonald refused to submit to the state-administered test of his blood. A warrant was secured for felony fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement against MacDonald. He also received citations for misdemeanor driving under the influence, failure to maintain lane, driving on divided highway, and reckless driving.

Pair busted with prison contraband

On July 13, The Baldwin County’s Sheriff Office was dispatched to Baldwin State Prison, at 140 Laying Farm Rd., to assist the Milledgeville Police Department regarding a suspicious male walking near the prison carrying a bag. A Georgia Department of Corrections roving patrol officer reported that a male wearing black pants and a gray hooded sweatshirt was walking down Carl Vinson Road toward the State Route 29 Bypass. While traveling on Carl Vinson Rd., the reporting officer observed a male matching the description in the driveway of 140 Carl Vinson Road.

He identified himself as Willie Holmes.

Holmes was sweating profusely, and stated he was waiting for a female who had dropped him off and was expected to return. When questioned, Holmes said the contents of the white grocery bag he was carrying were for personal use and contained marijuana. Holmes asked if the officer could contact the female and explained that he had her phone while she had his, and had to provide his own phone number so that the officer could reach her. Holmes could not recall the female’s name but said she was driving a maroon sedan. Holmes was taken into custody and upon inspection of the white bag, the officer discovered multiple baseball- sized packages wrapped in black duct tape containing suspected marijuana. The packaging was consistent with previous prison contraband drop attempts.

The GDC officer stated that earlier that morning, she had encountered a black female in a maroon sedan, possibly a Toyota Camry, with no visible tag, near the prison’s perimeter road. The female claimed she was searching for the correct prison for visitation before leaving toward Riverbend Correctional Facility. After putting the vehicle description out on the radio, a sergeant reported that he was behind a maroon Nissan Altima without a tag, southbound on Vinson Highway between Laying Farm Road and Carl Vinson Road. The driver was identified as Aretha Hearn. Hearn stated the passenger in the back seat was her cousin and that she had driven from Atlanta to Milledgeville to see him and visit someone at the prison. She informed police no one else had been in the vehicle. The officer informed Hearn that her vehicle had been seen on Baldwin State Prison grounds and she had been identified as the driver.

Hearn stated she had been there to visit an inmate.

Hearn stated that there was nothing illegal in the vehicle and gave consent for a search. The officer informed her she was being detained as a party to the crime of attempting to introduce contraband into a correctional facility. The officer retrieved the phone she claimed to be hers and confirmed it to be Holmes. Inside the vehicle, officers found an empty vacuum- sealed bag protruding from the center console, along with a single baseball-sized package on the passenger-side floorboard, wrapped in black duct tape. This was similar to the items found in Holmes’ possession.

Holmes stated that Hearn had driven from Atlanta to pick him up and bring him to Milledgeville for the purpose of conducting marijuana-related business. He confirmed that no one else had been in the vehicle with them. The other passenger was released from the scene.

Both individuals were taken into custody for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and further investigation was still ongoing as of The Baldwin Bulletin’s deadline.
