A Georgia Department of Transportation contractor will close United States 441 Business/State Route 29 Business at Fishing Creek this week to repair the 76-year-old Mayor Harry G. Bone Bridge, originally constructed in 1949. It is below current design standards, according to a GDOT press release.
“The exact day of closure is a moving target due to the forecast but it will be during the week of May 12,” said GDOT spokesperson Will Volk for the department's east division in the video announcement. “As soon as contractors have a dry day they will implement the closure.”
The road is expected to be closed for about nine months. Drivers are asked to use alternate routes. GDOT’s official detour recommends drivers to take Highway 441 Business South to U.S. Highway 441. Drivers are then instructed to take U.S. Highway 441 up to the intersection of Hancock Street or State Route 49.
“We appreciate your patience and understanding,” said Volk. “Once this is all over, you’ll have a new modern bridge.”
