Georgia Military College announced an upcoming renovation to its soccer field.
Currently, Georgia Military College Preparatory School (GMC Prep) teams, which are using the Davenport Field as the main field is too “rough” to be usable, according to GMC Prep Principal Col. Amy Lee.
“Our soccer field is used by multiple teams from elementary to college level,” said Lee.
“Despite prior renovations, after each season, the field remains weathered and rough.”
Lee said the current field has issues regarding drainage, divots, and significant wear and tear due to being used nearly 10 months a year. The upcoming renovation will involve a complete resurfacing of the soccer field, “including re-engineering the subsurface to incorporate a more stable substrate,” according to a press release.
“Our goal is to create a field that will be able to withstand soccer year round,” said Lee.
“They will be laying new sod that will support a healthier root system, allowing the field to handle high levels of usage.” Renovations are planned to begin in late spring with the field ready to be used by late summer.
“Soccer is an integral part of our athletics program, and we want to offer our players a field worthy to play on and practice on,” said Lee. “Many of our students play on and off this field and outside of the institution as the community’s soccer program grows as well. This is another way to reward our students’ success and hard work.”
The soccer field renovation is the beginning of a “major investment in its athletic programs,” according to a press release from the college. As of The Baldwin Bulletin’s deadline, these announcements had yet to be released.
