Allied Arts in Milledgeville hosted its first exhibit of the year featuring hand-made quilts from the Lake Oconee Quilt Guild.
“The quilts displayed are based on challenges set by the guild,” said Cookie Noel, member of the Lake Oconee Quilt Guild. “Our members take off from the guidelines to create something unique and fitting. Quilts receive awards based on the challenge.”
The Lake Oconee Quilt Guild was established in 2003 and has brought together talented quilters from all around the area. Each quilter creates intricate patterns with vibrant colors and a story to tell.
“Each quilt is stitched with passion, skill, and creativity,” said Kristin Allen, program coordinator.
Some of the challenges featured focused on creating a specific type of fabric like a “whimsical striped fabric” or “an ugly fabric.” Other challenges led quilters to create something inspired by another artist, like the theme to create a quilt interpreting a piece of Steffen Thomas’ art. Some challenges were more vague, leaving room for the artist to create anything they imagined, like the theme “It’s not easy being green,” or the hexagon challenge.
“The room is full of whimsy,” one attendee at the exhibit said.
Members of the guild, locals, and veterans from the Georgia War Veterans home attended the artists reception. Allen stated many people visited and walked through the exhibit leading up to the reception.
“We’ve had good traffic. People are interested in viewing each of the different quilts and their inspirations,” said Allen. “Despite rescheduling the reception due to the winter weather, we had a good turnout and were happy the veterans were able to enjoy the food and community.”
The exhibit was open through Jan. 28 for viewing. The next exhibit will open Feb. 6 at the Marlor House in downtown Milledgeville featuring art by Georgia College alumna Grace Wood.
“Her photography is inspired by the South and its people, locations, and stories,” said Allen. “We hope the community will take a moment to look through the lens of her camera and enjoy what she has captured.”
