Vehicle pursuit reaches 106 mph

On Oct. 26, an officer was stationary at State Route 29 Business (Irwinton Road) and Blackberry Lane, when a vehicle topped the hill at a high rate of speed. The vehicle straddled the center line, traveling in both the left and right lane. The driver, identified as Norris Miller, then failed to signal when getting completely into the right lane. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop with the vehicle at the intersection of Gordon Highway and Colony Farm Road but the vehicle accelerated. Miller continued south on Gordon Highway at speeds between 80 and 90 miles per hour in a posted 55 mile per hour zone. The officer continued pursuing the vehicle onto Salem Church Road at speeds of approximately 80 miles per hour in a posted 55 mile per hour speed zone. He then turned left onto State Route 49, where speeds reached 105 miles per hour and continued until stopping in front of 270 Kitchens Rd. Miller fled on foot and ignored verbal commands so the officer deployed his taser, which caused Miller to fall. The officer detected the strong odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage coming from his person, noticed Miller’s eyes were bloodshot and that his speech was slurred. Miller refused all testing but a search of Miller’s vehicle was conducted where two open containers of alcohol were located. Miller received citations for failure to maintain lane, open container, and DUI refusal. One state warrant on Miller was secured for felony fleeing and attempting to elude a law enforcement officer.
