Following an early off-week for both teams, the Baldwin Braves (0-2) return to play this Friday with their first region game of the season, hosting the Cross Creek Razorbacks. These teams last played in November 2019 when the Braves delivered a 41-0 beatdown to the Razorbacks.
This year’s Braves’ offense has struggled through its first two weeks of play, however, scoring only 18 points over two games. But a hard-fought 13-12 loss to Northside last month provides at least some encouragement for the rest of the season.
Cross Creek has a better start to its season, going 1-1 through the first two games. The Razorbacks dominated Josey 38-0 in their season opener but lost two weeks later in a 52-6 blowout at Burke County.
Though the Razorbacks have shown an ability to score points and play great defense, they also have been prone to playing poorly on both sides of the ball, making them a difficult team to evaluate.
One obvious thing, however, is that senior wide receiver Cam Nixon is the Razorbacks’ top player. Through just two games, Nixon has averaged 105.5 receiving yards per game with four touchdown receptions and 211 total yards receiving. Beyond Nixon, though, the Braves should be able to handle Cross Creek’s offense.
The Braves’ offense struggled with penalties against Northside two weeks ago, but with some time off to fix mental mistakes, the team should be better prepared to earn its first win of the season.
Kickoff between the Braves and Razorbacks will be 7:30 p.m.
Friday at Braves Field in Milledgeville.
