City council hears second workforce housing proposal

    The Milledgeville City Council met Tuesday to hear the second proposal for the Equity Fund application and Workforce Housing Grant.

    Lawson Lawrence, a local builder, presented his proposal for 46 single family homes on Dunlap Road. Each home would be between 1,100-1,600 square feet. He stated prices would range between $182,000 to $273,000 depending on the number of bedrooms and bathrooms. He stressed the location is close to local schools and the shopping district so families are in proximity of everything they need. The entrance to the land is also very visible, so despite potentially increased traffic, the area should remain safe.     After his presentation, council member Denese Shinholster presented a proclamation for Aug. 13 to be named Coach Barry Havior Day, as recognition of his achievements and dedication to the local track team, the Baldwin County Lightning Jets. Havior and kids on the team accepted the honor together and Havior made a speech, following the reading of the proclamation, to praise his athletes and tell his personal story.

    Moving into action items, council heard the first reading of three ordinances that will be voted on at the Aug. 27 meeting. Please refer to “Increases coming for alcohol sales, rentals, water” in this week’s issue for specific details. These ordinances included:

    • Anordinanceamending the ordinance setting license fees and conditions for specific businesses.

    • Anordinanceamending the ordinance setting charges for sewer services, water services, water and sewer tapping and connection fees and other related fees and deposits.

    • Anordinanceamending the ordinance setting fees for permits and inspections.

    The council then unanimously voted to approve a resolution updating fees for Parks and Pavilion rentals, which is an update to the resolution that approved rules and regulations for Parks and Pavilion rentals passed in 2018.

    Concluding the meeting, council unanimously approved a resolution to authorize an amendment to the tower attachment lease agreement with New Cingular Wireless PCS, LLC to modify the terms and conditions for the placement of equipment and rent on the water tank located at 149 Roberson Mill Rd.
