Man wrecks at Smyrna Truck and Cargo

On June 8, law enforcement was dispatched to Smyrna Truck and Cargo, at 138 Roberson Mill Rd., in reference to a welfare check. Upon arrival, the occupant, later identified as Quantarius Cannie, was found passed out in his 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee in a ditch on the property.

Upon making contact with Cannie in his vehicle, he was found asleep in the driver's seat. An officer proceeded to knock on the window to wake him up. Once Cannie woke up, he appeared to be very disoriented and his breath had the smell of an alcoholic beverage.

Cannie advised he was sleeping in his vehicle due to his steering wheel locking up, which caused him to wreck. Cannie added that his phone had died, which did not allow for him to make any phone calls. Law enforcement conducted a Standardized Field Sobriety Test and determined he was operating the motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Cannie consented to a breathalyzer test and his blood alcohol content was measured at 0.058 grams of alcohol in his system. Cannie was cited for DUI and failure to drive within a single lane.

As the pursuit approached the intersection of Gordon Highway and Irwinton Road, Green turned south on Irwinton Road and slowed down to speeds of 50 mph until Green turned onto Jackson Road. Man arrested for DUI

On June 8, law enforcement observed a vehicle driving east on East Hancock Street with no headlights on at the intersection of South Elbert Street. Officers initiated a traffic stop in the parking lot of The Whiskey Tunnel. Upon speaking with the driver, identified as Travis Blount, the officer reported smelling the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Blount stated he had a valid drivers license but did not have it on his person.

When asked how much marijuana was in the car, Blount stated, “It’s all gone.” A partially burnt marijuana cigarette laid on the console. Blount confirmed it to be the last of the marijuana in the car. Blount was instructed to exit the vehicle and officers watched him dispose of the marijuana on the pavement.

At this time, officers could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Blount. An officer performed a Standardized Field Sobriety Test and determined he was operating the motor vehicle while under the influence.

The deputy also took a breath sample from Blount on a roadside PBT, which provided an estimation of a BAC of 0.118. During a search of the vehicle, officers also located two open containers of Monster 6% alcoholic beverages stashed in the passenger side door compartment. Both were approximately half full. They also located the remains of a cold 12 pack of the same Monster beverages in the back seat. No other drugs were discovered. Blount was placed under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol.
