Dr. Michael Snowder, a leader who recognizes the essential values of diversity and inclusion in higher education, has been chosen to serve as Georgia College & State University’s new chief diversity officer.
“I am pleased Dr. Snowden will be joining our campus and leading our Office of Inclusive Excellence,” said Georgia College President Cathy Cox. “We can’t wait for him to get started on this important work.”
“Throughout his career, Dr. Snowden has amplified the voices of underserved student populations, bringing to the forefront the themes of inclusivity and belongingness in higher education. Georgia College will benefit greatly from his passion and deep experience in this field and his willingness to share that knowledge across our campus.”
Snowden took over as chief diversity officer July 1. He most recently served as vice president of Inclusion and Diversity at Northwestern State University in Louisiana, where he developed a strategic plan for diversity, equity and inclusivity and established training modules and coaching seminars.
He worked nine years as chief diversity and Title IX officer for McNeese State University in Louisiana. He was selected for the University of Louisiana Management & Leadership Institute and also served 12 years as director of Multicultural Affairs at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah.
Snowden has given multiple presentations on inclusive excellence in educational and professional settings and served as keynote speaker at events.
He earned his undergraduate degree in business administration, a master of education in educational administration and leadership and a Ph.D. in educational administration with an emphasis in higher education from the University of Southern Mississippi.
“We believe Dr. Snowden’s leadership will help us continue and strengthen a welcoming and inclusive campus climate at Georgia College,” Cox said, “that allows every member of our community to succeed, be respected as individuals and feel a sense of belonging here.”
