Georgia Military College (GMC) inducted three new members into its The Hall of Heroes on April 14, the highest honor given by the institution. The Hall of Heroes pays tribute to alumni of the GMC Corps of Cadets who have demonstrated extraordinary service to the United States and upheld the core philosophy of Georgia Military College.
In attendance were multiple faculty and staff, including GMC Prep School President Lt. Col. Amy Lee, GMC Milledgeville Campus President Lt. Gen. (Ret.) William B. Caldwell IV, Director of Alumni and Community Engagement Craig Portwood, and the 144th Corp of Cadets. Members of the Board of Trustees and family members of the Hall of Heroes inductees also attended.
The Hall of Heroes inductees included Lt. Louis “Chap” Ashmore, and posthumously, the Honorable Powell Moore and MAJ Joseph Ulher.
Ashmore attended GMC Junior College from 1963-1965. After graduating with his associate degree, he obtained a building construction degree from the University of Florida and entered the U.S. Army in 1968 as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry. After serving in Vietnam, 1LT Ashmore joined the 160th Military Police Battalion in Tallahassee, Fla., where he eventually was promoted to Captain and assumed the position of Company Commander. CPT Ashmore retired in 1980 from the U.S. Army.
“I feel very proud and honored to be nominated,” Ashmore said. “It is quite an honor to receive this award. I owe a lot to Georgia Military College, as it really changed my life and taught me the values of leadership and courage.”
Moore attended GMC High School and graduated in 1955 before attending GMC Junior College for one year. After graduating from the University of Georgia in 1959, he was commissioned as an Infantry officer in the United States Army for more than three years.
Upon concluding military service, Moore embarked on a public service career.
During his lifetime, Moore served in senior positions for two U.S. senators and four U.S. presidents. In April 2001, President George Bush nominated Moore to be assistant secretary of defense for legislative affairs and he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate a month later. Moore concluded his public service in 2009 as representative of the U.S. Secretary of Defense to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Vienna, Austria.
Ulher graduated from GMC Junior College in 1942 and immediately went into military service, earning many honors and distinctions throughout World War II. Initially stationed in England with the 894th Tank Destroyer Battalion, within months Uhler landed in Oran, Algeria, and was committed to battle in February 1943. During the heat of battle in Tunisia, Uhler received a field promotion to 1st Lieutenant.
Due to his bravery and dedication to his service and country, Ulher was later field promoted to the rank of Major. After returning home to Georgia from the war, Uhler continued his education at the University of Georgia’s School of Forestry. Uhler worked in the forestry industry and lived in Milledgeville until his passing in April 2007.
“Having three former alumni being inducted was special and privileged. It allows us to identify and recognize the service and dedication to our nation in and out of uniform and gives credit to their contribution to the betterment of the United States of America and Georgia Military College,” Lt. Gen Caldwell IV said. “These three men have done that in three very different ways and it’s great to have the families and alumni be in attendance to recognize the hard work that they have done.”
The event was held inside the Goldstein Center for Performing Arts and was followed by more festivities for the inductees and the alumni association of Georgia Military College.
