The Georgia College and State University Women’s Soccer team announce its fall schedule following the hire of new head coach Jack Marchant. The local fans are in for a show as the Bobcats have eight home games scheduled.
The first game on home turf for the Bobcats starts out on Sept. 3 with former head coach Tinna Gallagher’s alma mater, the University of Auburn at Montgomery.
The War Eagles were 6-10 overall last season playing in the competitive Gulf South Conference. The only time these two squads faced off was in 2016 under former head coach Hope Clark, when the team took a 2-0 victory.
The Bobcats will take a two-week break from playing in Milledgeville until the Sept. 17, but then bring in their first conference contest with Georgia Southwestern University. Last season GC traveled to GSW and got the nailbiter 1-0 win, in which returning midfielder Summer Ligon, hailing from Carrolton, scored the lone goal of the contest. GSW ended conference play last season at 2-7-1 and GC finished at 3-6.
The next game at Bobcat Field will be held Sept. 24 against the defending PBC champions in Flagler College. The Bobcats took a heartbreaking 3-2 quarter-final loss to the Saints last November. GC led FC by one goal going into the half which was scored by the returning fifth-year senior from West Suffield, Connecticut, Alexis Bergamini. The shot was a low ball shot from around the eight-yard mark after receiving a throw-in. Flagler finished conference play 7-2 as the PBC Tournament Champions.
As GC gets into the heart of conference play, they will bring home Clayton State on the 28th to close out September. The Bobcats hosted the Lakers last season as well and picked up a 3-0 loss.
The first day of October means the first home contest of the month for GC women’s soccer. They will continue into conference play as they take on USC Aiken. GC traveled to Aiken last season and took a 1-0 overtime loss to the Paces. The Bobcat defense was able to hold the pacers to only two shots on goal through to overtime play. GC ultimately dominated the time of possession the entire game having 15 shots on goal.
Two weeks later the Bobcats will bring in The University of North Georgia to play at Bobcat Field on the 15th. Last season GC traveled to Dahlonega and took the double overtime 1-0 loss. Goalkeeper Kate Richardson had an impressive performance having nine saves on 10 shots on goal. The Nighthawks ended their conference season going 6-3 to match that of Clayton State.
On Oct. 19, the Bobcats will take a break from conference play to take on the Wolves of Newberry University. GC traveled last season and picked up the 3-1 victory. The recently graduated fifth-year senior from Marietta, Becca Morris knocked in two goals, both coming in the first half. The upcoming freshman Aralyn Everett scored the final of the contest in the final 15 minutes of the contest. Newberry finished their South Atlantic Conference season going 5-6.
To wrap up the home part of the regular season the Bobcats will host Lander University on Oct. 19. Last season on the road GC took the 2-1 loss after scoring in the first half. The only goal for the Bobcats came from Alexis Bergamini, hailing from West Suffield, Connecticut, who recently wrapped up her career at GC. Lander finished 7-2 in the PBC last season.
GC kicks off its season on the road at Florida Southern. The Bobcats and the Mocs last faced off in 2019 when GC also took a trip. The Mocs took the 1-0 win over the Bobcats so this will be a redemption game for the Cats. The full schedule is available at GCBobcats.com.
