The City Council of Milledgeville unanimously approved an ordinance that allows for a special election to fill the Alderman of District five of the City of Milledgeville position in a called meeting Tuesday, after the passing of former Alderman Richard “Boo” Mullins Jr. on April 23 of this year left the seat vacant.
Although Mayor Mary Parham-Copelan could not attend the meeting in-person, she was able to call in and listen to the proceedings, which were led by District Six Representative Steve Chambers. The meeting suspended the usual rules to call for a special election to ensure the seat is filled in a timely manne. According to chamber, the official way to call the election is incredibly stringent and time-sensitive so suspending the rules was the best option. After the suspension of the rules, the ordinance was adopted by unanimous vote which allows the election to take place in November, the earliest possible time for an election like this.
“Georgia Election Code provides that in even numbered years, a special election can be held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November,” according to the ordinance.
The election will be held at the Milledgeville Fire Department Station at 201 West Thomas St, on Tuesday, Nov. 8 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. The qualifying fee, which puts your name on the ballot, will be $180.00.
The official notice for the election will be released to the public in the official county organ Saturday, July 9, and copies of the ordinance itself will also be available for the public to access.
