Last week, the Milledgeville Police Department announced that in conjunction with the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, they will be participating in the 2022 “One Hundred Days of HEAT” mobilization.
According to a press release, H.E.A.T. – or Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic – is a statewide initiative between state and local law enforcement agencies.
During the duration of the program, law enforcement agencies will be targeting drivers participating in unsafe driving behaviors. The goal is to reduce the number of crashes that can result in serious injuries or fatalities on the roadways.
Starting this June, officers will heavily monitor specific problem areas in the city. Each month will also include a 12-day warning period used to educate drivers of increased enforcement effort in the area.
After each warning period officers will begin issuing traffic issues citations and heavily enforcing traffic laws throughout the city.
Many citizens have already noticed an increase in police presence on North Columbia Street, which will serve as the first area of observation for the 2022 initiative. In 2021 there were 415 reported traffic collisions on N. Columbia St, resulting in 184 injuries and one fatality.
The program will continue through September of 2022.
