The coaching staff at the University of Georgia are already familiar with Baldwin running back Micah Welch.
Welch has previously been to Athens several times this spring to visit UGA. He has also already formed a tight relationship with Bulldogs’ running backs coach Dell McGee, who is the lead recruiter for him.
“My relationship with coach (Dell) McGee is good right now,” Welch said. “He teaches me (a lot). He's explained to me what’s a good way to come out of the backfield and all that.”
Welch visited UGA on the first day of spring practice back in March. He returned a month later during Georgia's annual G-Day scrimmage in April. Welch then visited again on June 2nd.
The 5-foot-9, 195-pound tailback said McGee first reached out to him earlier this year in February. He added that was when the Bulldogs extended him an official scholarship offer.
“My first time talking to coach McGee was last summer during a 7-on-7 camp,” Welch said. “It wasn’t until last week that I finally got to work out in front of him again (during camp drills)."
Welch got the chance to showcase his skillset against others at the camp he attended last week. He was satisfied with his performance, especially after the grab he made out of the backfield.
He highlighted that the pace of play was "much faster" than what he’s used to.
“It was great,” Welch said. “The (drills) were much faster, too. I caught on and learned a lot of stuff.”
Besides catching up with McGee, Welch got a chance to chat and converse with 2022 highly-touted UGA running back signee Branson Robinson.
“He was just telling me how fun it is being a part of the program,” Welch said. “He also talked to me about how hard (the team) works. It’s a lot different than high school football.”
Welch said he loves that UGA is only an hour-and-a-half from Milledgeville. So, the proximity of campus being so close to home is a huge positive for both him and the Bulldogs.
“It’s close to home, and it is also called RBU (Running Back University) for a reason,” Welch said. “They put out great backs.”
As he prepares to enter his junior season at Baldwin, Welch still feels like he has a lot to prove.
He said his development over the next two seasons will only help him in the long run.
“I feel like I am improving on catching (balls) out of the backfield,” Welch said. “I have been working on that specifically, and many other aspects of my game to help my recruitment.”
Welch currently holds offers from Georgia, Georgia Tech, Liberty, Louisville, Middle Tennessee State, NC State, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Tennessee. He is also rated as a fourstar prospect by Rivals. com.
Rivals rates Welch as one of its top-250 players for the class of 2024. He is currently rated as the nation’s No. 164 overall prospect, No. 12 running back and No. 27 player in Georgia.
However, Welch said he doesn’t care much for stars or recruiting rankings.
“My main concern is helping out my team next season,” Welch said. “We’re young but we have a lot of talent returning on the offensive side of the ball (next season). I am excited about that.”
As far as his recruitment process goes, Welch is just going to see how everything plays out.
