‘SPLASH’ for water safety

Georgia Power encourages all lake users to follow “SPLASH” guidelines to stay safe while in or near bodies of water.

• Supervision: Designate an adult to watch children at all times. Do not assume someone else is watching;

• Prevention: Wear life jackets, install fencing around pools, and use drain covers in pools;

• Lookbeforeyouleap: Never jump into water without knowing how deep it is and what is below the surface;

• Arm’s length: Adults should be within an arm’s length away from young children in water, and safety tools such as hooks and floating rescue rings should be nearby at all times;

• SwimLessons: Knowing how to swim greatly reduces the risk of drowning; and,

• Haveawatersafetyplan: Discuss beforehand what to do during an emergency.

Follow basic water safety rules. For example, more than 70% of boating deaths are due to a person not wearing a life jacket.
