Rick Williams wins GOP nomination for senate

State Rep. Rick Williams won the Republican nomination for Senate District 25 outright despite having three challengers.

In Baldwin County, Williams earned 84.97% of the vote with Rick Jeffares in second at 12.21%. Leland Olinger II finished at 1.3% with Daniela Sullivan-Marzahl tallying 1.52% of the votes.

District-wide, Williams only needed 50% plus one vote to avoid a runoff but pulled in 53.02%. A total of 12,472 out of 23,523 GOP voters picked Williams to move to the State Senate.

Valerie Rodgers ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination, so she will face Williams in the General Election.

Like the rest of Georgia, Baldwin Republicans chose Gov. Brian Kemp to run for a second term with 77.41% of the vote. Trump-backed David Perdue came up with just 907 votes in Baldwin, good for 18.82%.

State Sen. Burt Jones, who currently represents District 25, garnered 73.99% of Baldwin County’s votes for the GOP nomination, followed by Butch Miller at 17.31%. The statewide results are a different matter, however.

With 95.6% of precincts reporting Wednesday, Jones earned 50.08 percent of the vote. That race is too close to call. If Jones falls below the 50% plus one vote threshold, he will face Butch Miller in a runoff June 21.

Also notable is the race for Secretary of State. Congressman Jody Hice won most of Baldwin County’s votes at 58.32% over incumbent Brad Raffensperger.

Statewide, Raffensperger defeated his three challengers with 52.31% of the vote. He will face the winner of a runoff for the Democratic nomination between Bee Nguyen and Dee Dawkins-Haigler.

Understandably, one Democrat preformed better in Baldwin County than the others for the Secretary of State nomination. Floyd Griffin earned 76.91% of the vote, despite finishing at 10.86% statewide.

In State House District 128, Democrat incumbent Mack Johnson ran unopposed.

With Williams running for State Senate, that left House District 133 vacant. Republican Kenneth Vance and Democrat Hoganne Harrison Walton will face off in November as neither had a primary challenger.

For U.S. Senate, Baldwin County Republicans picked Herschel Walker with 79.46% of the vote, mirroring state results. He will face Sen. Raphael Warnock in November.

District 8 Congressman Austin Scott was unopposed in the Republican Primary and will face Democrat Darrius Butler in the General Election.
