Georgia Military College commemorated the 250th birthday of the United States Army with a ceremony held on Friday, June 13 on GMC’s Main Campus.
The event honored the Army’s historic legacy as the oldest branch of the United States military, established on June 14, 1775 — more than a year before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Members of the GMC community, military veterans, students, and local supporters gathered beneath the flagpole for a program that included patriotic remarks, the playing of the Army Song, and a traditional cake-cutting ceremony to mark this significant milestone.
GMC was honored to have Baldwin County Commissioner Sammy Hall and City Council Alderman Walter Reynolds read proclamations from both Baldwin County and the City of Milledgeville.
“This was a moment to reflect on 250 years of courage, commitment, and sacrifice,” said GMC President Lt. Gen. (Ret.) William B. Caldwell, IV. “As an institution with strong military roots, we are proud to honor the U.S. Army and its continued service to our nation.”
The celebration was not only a tribute to past accomplishments but also a call to look ahead with pride and purpose.
The Army’s motto, “This We’ll Defend,” continues to inspire generations of soldiers, leaders, and citizens alike. Georgia Military College is honored to have hosted this meaningful event, reaffirming its commitment to the values of duty, honor, and love of country that have defined the U.S. Army for two-and-a-half centuries.
