DPH launches tool for Monkeypox vaccine

The Georgia Department of Health (DPH) launched a new centralized tool for the Monkeypox vaccine earlier this week. The tool is now available on the DPH website.

Cases of Monkeypox are continuing to grow nationwide. As of August 16, the CDC has a total of 12,689 total cases. According to the same report, Georgia has reported 1,013 cases.

Because there is a limited supply of the Jynneos ™ monkeypox vaccine, citizens must answer a series of questions when scheduling online. The DPH will prioritize the vaccine to those who have been exposed to monkeypox.

The monkeypox virus can spread from person-to-person through direct contact with the infectious rash, scabs, or body fluids. It also can be spread by respiratory secretions during prolonged, face-to-face contact, or during intimate physical contact, such as kissing, cuddling, or sex. While more than 90% of those affected in the current global outbreak are gay, bisexual, or other men who have sex with men, anyone who has been in close contact with someone who has monkeypox can be infected.

At this time, the monkeypox vaccination is available at two North Central Health District county health departments by appointment:

• Houston County Health Department: Tuesdays, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.

• Baldwin County Health Department: Thursdays, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.

To register for monkeypox vaccination at either location, visit DPH’s Vaccination Appointment website or call the Vaccine Scheduling Resource Line at (888) 457-0186.

The DPH strongly encourages citizens to avoid close skin-to-skin contact with anyone who has a rash that looks like monkeypox or touching the rash or scab of someone who has tested positive for the virus.

They are also encouraging everyone to wash their hands often with soap and water or using an alcohol- based hand sanitizer.
