Dive teams searching for man who fell into lake

UPDATED AT 3 P.M. SATURDAY

The search for the man who fell off of the jet ski on Lake Sinclair July 4 continued Saturday, and authorities are saying the man is from the Dekalb County area.

Around 9 a.m. July 5, Georgia DNR came in with more game wardens and boats and their side scan sonar to assist in the efforts. And shortly after noon, two cadaver dogs went out — "Felon" from Spalding County L.A.W.S., and "Zita" from Butts County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities said the man who fell off the jet ski and whom they are searching for is Christopher Grant. The search continues in the waters between what is known as Optimist Island and Little Optimist Island, about 1/4-mile from Haslam's Marina.

Baldwin County Public Safety Dive Team is searching Lake Sinclair for a man who fell off of a jet ski.

Baldwin County Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Bradley Towe, who also is the commander of the dive team, said two men, approximately 30 years old, were riding the jet ski. The driver was wearing a life jacket, but the passenger was not.

“The jet ski overturned, and they both fell off,” Towe said. “They both surfaced and someone tossed a life jacket to the passenger, but he went under before he could get to it.”

Towe said his team received the call shortly after 4:40 p.m. They responded to Haslam’s Marina, near the scene on Lake Sinclair where the man was seen going under. Authorities have not released the identity of either men. Divers have been searching the area with sonar for more than an hour with no results.

“The water is murky, we can’t see anything at all,” commented one of the divers, Deputy Lt. Brandon Towe, when they came in for a quick break.

Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office deputies, the Putnam County Fire Department Dive Team and Georgia DNR game wardens are assisting in the search. Atrium Health Navicent EMS is on the scene.
