Baldwin High School was recognized as a Safe Sports School by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, making it the 21st school in Georgia to receive the designation. The award honors schools that go above and beyond in student-athlete safety, emergency readiness, and wellness education.

“Being named a Safe Sports School validates the intentional steps we’re taking to protect and empower our students,” Baldwin County Superintendent Dr. Kristina Brooks said. “Athletic Trainer Drew Shivers represents the best of who we are — and where we’re going.”

When Shawn Andrew Shivers joined Baldwin County School District Athletics last July, he became the district’s first full-time athletic trainer.

“I take care of all athletes on campus, no matter what sport,” Shivers explained. “It’s not just about wrapping ankles. It’s about education. It’s about care.”

On any given day, Shivers may treat 15-30 student-athletes from cross-country runners and football linemen to wrestlers, softball players, and track stars.

His reach spans across fall, winter, and spring sports, helping students stay on the field and in the game.

“Drew has not only elevated the quality of care for our student-athletes,” Baldwin High School Principal Markeeta Clayton said.

“He’s changed the culture. Our students feel seen, supported, and prepared every time they step onto the field, court, or track.”

That “culture of care” is why Baldwin High School now meets every requirement of a Georgia Safe Sports School, including:

• Full-timeaccesstoa certified athletic trainer

• Comprehensiveinjury prevention and concussion protocols

• Emergencyactionplanning and response

• Heatillnessandenvironmental monitoring, and

• Wellnesseducationfor students, coaches, and staff.

Through ESPLOST funding, Shivers bought new equipment and established new training spaces by converting unused rooms across campus into modern athletic training centers, complete with recovery tools, weights, and rehabilitation stations.

“Drew’s presence has brought peace of mind to parents, students, and coaches alike,” said Athletic Director Dexter Ricks. “We know our athletes are getting the same level of care they’d receive at the college level. That makes all the difference.”
