Award-winning author Susan Lindsley will hold a book signing for her book
Whitetail Secrets: Family Life at the Red Door on 133 South Wayne Street on Dec. 16 and 17, from 1-3 p.m.
“There have been thousands of ‘deer books’ published…but rarely do you come across a ‘fun’ deer book,” said Dr. KarlV. Miller, emeritus professor of deer management at the University of Georgia.
“ Family Life deserves a place in the library of any whitetail enthusiast.”
Susan spent more than four years studying deer behavior and relationships while photographing their individual and inter-deer actions.
Some of the photographs are unusual, and she says it was not often that she saw repeated behaviors.
For example, one year she saw two orphaned twins and the next year two badly injured deer visited. “A photographer remembers the pictures missed,” Lindsley said.
“One was a fawn jumping over the pool. One was a buck knocked down only twenty feet away.
But I also caught a rare instance of an antlered buck and fawn nursing their mother at the same time.”
She says the strangest action she saw was a buck eating a daffodil flower and throwing a “hissy fit” for several minutes.
“Deer are not supposed to eat daffodils,” Lindsley said, “but, this fellow did. There may be some chemical in the flower that affected his brain or nervous system. Scenarios like this are what made my research for the book so interesting.”
Alongside signing and selling her book, Lindsley’s 2023 calendar of back yard deer will also be available for this event. She encourages everyone to visit the Red Door on Dec. 16 and 17 to explore these scenarios for themselves.
