Allied Arts hosts Georgia Artists with Disabilities Exhibit

Allied Arts in partnership with the Georgia Artists with DisAbilities, Inc.’s (GAWD) statewide tour is hosting the Georgia Artists with Disabilities exhibit.

Georgia Artists with DisAbilities, Inc. was founded by the Pilot Clubs of Metropolitan Atlanta in 1985, enabling disabled artists throughout Georgia to display and sell their original art, as well as compete for awards. Based on the awards an artist receives, their artwork is displayed in a statewide tour.

GAWD’s exhibition for the 2022-2023 year revisited the theme of their first year, “Visions and Dreams, Tomorrow’s Reality.” “There are many disabled artists in Georgia who have visions and dreams but have no way of making it a reality. We help make it a reality for them,” states the exhibition’s description.

Over 100 pieces were submitted to the exhibition with pieces awarded honorable mentions, best of show or chairman’s award being displayed on a statewide tour. According to the GAWD website, the tour began Dec. 1, 2022, in Monticello. There are seven cities on the tour with the Marlor House, in Milledgeville, as the fourth stop.

Several Baldwin County artists are a part of the of the statewide tour including Laura Howard and their crochet piece “A Lost Art” awarded Distinguished Merit; Dee Weimer and their photograph “I Love You, Now Change” awarded Best of Show; Tomika Walker and their photograph “A Burst of Nature” awarded Honorable Mention; Socorro Walker and their photograph “Oceanwalk” awarded Honorable Mention; and Selena Wiggins and their photograph “Mist Morning” awarded Honorable Mention.

“Every piece in the exhibit is beautiful,” said Dr. Carla Walter, executive director of Allied Arts. “Allied Arts provides artistic experiences that uplift the human spirit by providing a broad range of inclusive experiences in the performing, visual, literary and heritage arts. An exhibit like this promotes both inclusivity and an uplifting power that matches our goals.”

Milledgeville Baldwin County Allied Arts Inc. was established as a Georgia nonprofit organization and has provided programs since Dec. 24, 1986.

Allied Arts will be displaying the Georgia Artists with Disabilities exhibit through April 27. The Marlor House Art Center is open Monday – Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday on April 15 and 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
