Agencies work together to solve shooting investigation

Throughout the night March 21, night-shift units with the Milledgeville Police Department collaborated with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office to investigate multiple shooting incidents in both the city and the county. Fortunately, only minor injuries were reported during these events.

At 10:30 p.m., the sheriff’s office responded to a shooting on Lee Street. At 11:18 p.m., police units were dispatched to investigate a speeding maroon vehicle traveling through downtown headed north on North Wayne Street that was missing a tire. Officers canvassed the area but were unable to locate the vehicle. At 11:20, Lt. Thompson was flagged down in front of the police department by Antonio Spencer, who appeared to be under the influence of narcotics but reported that someone was trying to kill him.

EMS was called, and he was transported to the hospital.

At 1:35 a.m., police units were dispatched to the 1600 block of Pine Valley Road regarding shots fired and a residence struck by gunfire.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that the residence is where Spencer lived and was associated with the maroon sedan. After gathering further information, officers located the crashed maroon sedan deep in the woods at the dead end of North Wayne Street.

Detectives later spoke with Spencer at the hospital, but he provided little to no information regarding the circumstances of the wreck or why his residence has been shot. Shortly thereafter, Spencer was released from the hospital.

At 5:15 a.m., the sheriff’s office responded to another shots fired call on Lee Street. They obtained a vehicle description, and shortly after, a deputy spotted the vehicle, initiating a pursuit.

Milledgeville Police Department Sgt. Brandon Crawford and officer Darius Binion took the lead in the vehicle pursuit, which traveled south on Swint Avenue, through the Central State grounds, and back to Vinson Highway, navigating multiple side streets before re-emerging on Vinson Highway, where a deputy assumed primary position in the pursuit. The vehicle then pulled into a driveway on Bell Avenue and two occupants fled from the vehicle.

Crawford deployed his department-issued drone and located two subjects in the woods near Bell Avenue and Edwards Street. Crawford directed deputies and officers to the area, and the two subjects were taken into custody. Those subjects were identified as Antonio and Shawn Spencer. Antonio was in possession of a rifle when he was taken into custody.

“We would like to highlight the excellent work done by both the police department and the sheriff’s office nightshift units. There was a lot of information sharing and teamwork that led to where we are now in these investigations,” said Major Linc Boyer.
