Trojans trump pair of Knights to start season

The John Milledge Academy (JMA) Trojans boys’ basketball team opened its season last Friday with a 61-42 road win over the Dominion Christian Knights of Marietta.

Three days later, JMA visited Windsor Academy of Macon and came away with a 69-52 decision, again over the Knights.

The Trojans beat the Knights with rebounds and assists being key to their success. JMA outrebounded Dominion Christian 37-21 and had 19 assists.

JMA struggled shooting from beyond the arc, however, but managed to shoot 45 percent on field goals and 54 percent from the free throw line.

The Trojans were down 19-15 early in the second quarter but stormed back to take a 39-37 lead late in the third thanks to some key defensive plays. They then tacked on another 22 points in the fourth for the win.

Isaiah Womble led the Trojans in scoring against DC with 21 points and 6 rebounds.

On Monday, JMA played a tight contest against Windsor Academy until the fourth quarter when the Trojans pulled away for a 69-52 win.

At the end of the game, the Trojans led in rebounds, blocks, and all shooting categories. The Trojans had 42 rebounds to Windsor’s 22 and four blocks to zero for the Knights. JMA ball handlers shot 50 percent on field goals, 31 percent from three, and 75 percent from the free-throw line.

The teams tied with nine steals each on the night.

JMA will return to the hardwood this Friday, hosting Central Fellowship Christian of Macon in Milledgeville. The Trojans will also host the Larry Prestridge Classic Dec. 19-20, with Loganville Christian and ACE Charter visiting.

JMA will play Loganville Christian on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and ACE at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Trojans will then head to Marietta Dec. 21-23 to play North Cobb in their opening game for the annual Lemon Street Classic hosted by Marietta High School.
