GCSU women’s basketball comes close, twice

Georgia College & State University women’s basketball (13-11, 5-9 PBC) suffered two tough losses last week, on the road Feb. 8, against USC Aiken (USCA) and at home Feb. 11, to Georgia Southwestern State University (GSSU). The Bobcats fell short of a second-half comeback with a tight 62-60 decision in favor of Peach Belt Conference (PBC) foe USCA, then fell 66-63 in another close contest against GSSU.

The GCSU offense got off to a rough start against USC Aiken, netting only 13 points compared to the Pacers’ 34 in the first half.

As the contest progressed, however, the Georgia College offense heated up, outscoring USCA in both the third and fourth quarters with 24 and 23 points, respectively. Meanwhile, the Pacers put together an 11-point third quarter and a 17-point fourth quarter to eke out the win.

GCSU’s offense had one double-digit scorer, with two just missing the mark. Super senior Harper Vick led the scoring effort with 14 points after going 5-for-9 from the floor while adding an impressive 4-for-4 from the freethrow line.

Alexa Geary netted nine points as the team’s second-leading scorer, with three field goals and going 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, and Ashyia Willis nailed eight points coming on four field goals.

Jada Warren led the squad in rebounding with 12, including nine under the Pacers’ basket. The second-leading rebounder for the Bobcats was super senior Cassidy Markle.

The second game of the week was a road match against Georgia Southwestern in Americus. The Bobcats got off to a better scoring start with 27 points in the first half, but the Hurricanes put up 36 points for the opening half.

GCSU looked good while going after a second-half upset, outscoring GSW 36-30 in the second half and holding the Hurricanes to just eight points in the final quarter, but it just wasn’t quite enough.

Bobcat DaShuan Jackson led the Bobcats’ offense with a seasonhigh 22 points, which also doubled her career high in the blue and green. She had a stellar performance, going 10-for-15 from the floor as well as shooting from both 3-point range and from the free-throw line.

Myra Strickland rounded out the doubledigit scoring for the Bobcats with 10 points after going 3-for-6 from field-goal range, which included two 3-point buckets. Willis was third in scoring with 8 points on four field goals.

Warren continued to show her rebounding prowess, too, as she led the team with 10, including six rebounds under the GCSU basket. Rose Bone was the team’s second-leading rebounder with six, nabbing five under the GSW hoop. Strickland and Jackson rounded out the leading rebounders with five apiece.

The Bobcats will play Clayton State University Feb. 18, with a 3:30 start at the Centennial Center for Homecoming weekend. Live stats and broadcast links are available at GCBobcats.com.
