Bulldogs begin region play at home Friday

The GMC Prep Bulldogs will begin region play on Friday when they host the Johnson County Trojans at Davenport Field.

GMC Prep is sporting a 1-4 record after its first win of the season came two weeks ago when it beat Riverside Military Academy by a score of 46-12 in Gainesville.

Meanwhile, Johnson County has a 2-2 record this season after going 13-1 in 2022, winning the region title, and making it to the state semifinals against Schley County.

Johnson County's offense in 2023 is not playing as well as it was last season, but its defense remains good, allowing 43 points in the last three games after giving up 28 points in a tight 28-26 season-opening loss to Jenkins.

The Trojans offense has scored 82 points through four games this season but in the last game against Emanuel County Institute, managed just one touchdown in a 15-7 loss.

GMC showed considerable improvement in its win over RMA but will face a much better opponent this Friday.

The Bulldogs’ offense has sputtered outside of the Riverside game, so Johnson County’s defense is sure to give them fits come Friday night.

However, GMC’s players will no doubt come out with more confidence after putting a win on the board and will be looking to pull off a major region upset by hitting their stride against the Trojans.
