Baldwin girls continue dominating season

The Baldwin Bravettes extended their win streak to 15 with two convincing victories over Spalding and defending state champion Griffin last week.

Baldwin hosted the Spalding Jaguars last Tuesday and jumped out to a 15-point lead in the first quarter that had doubled to 30 by halftime with a 52-22 score. The closest quarter of play came in the third when Spalding managed 19 to Baldwin’s 26 points.

The Bravettes finished off the Jaguars by scoring the most they have all year, in a twice-as-many 98-49 final. Baldwin’s leading scorers were Janaye Walker and Kassidy Neal, who each contributed 24 points to the cause.

Walker impressed defensively, too, grabbing 10 rebounds on defense and nine on offense, while Madison Ruff had a team-leading four steals and eight assists.

On Friday night, Baldwin traveled to Griffin for its final road region game of the year. The Bravettes bested the defending champs 66-46 on Jan. 2 in Milledgeville, so they arrived with high hopes of keeping their win streak alive.

Baldwin dominated the first half, blanking the Lady Bears in the second quarter, which led to a 34-10 lead at halftime. The two teams played a much tighter second half, with Griffin outscoring the Bravettes 18-16 in the third quarter.

Baldwin ultimately prevailed, though, with a solid 19-12 advantage in the fourth quarter that led to a 69-40 final tally.

The win over Griffin improved the Bravettes to a 10-0 record in region play and they clinched their fourth region championship in the past five seasons Tuesday night with a dominating 69-19 region decision at home over Westside.

The Bravettes have two games left on their regular-season schedule, hosting West Laurens this Friday night and again at home next Tuesday against Swainsboro.
