Taps Across America all set for Monday

Jeff Dantzler, the newly-minted play-byplay radio announcer for Georgia Bulldogs football games, will be in town on Monday, all part of the Taps Across America celebration at Duke’s Dawghouse on the lake.

Taps Across America is a nationwide movement that aims to have “Taps” played in as many places as possible at exactly 3 p.m. on Memorial Day. “Taps” is the 24-note melody that has honored fallen service members for more than 150 years.

This will mark the seventh year that Milledgeville has taken part in the celebration. Katie Berry Moody will perform the solo, while Dantzler will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

“Any way that people want to come, we encourage them to come. By boat, by car or on foot – it doesn’t matter,” said event co-organizer Larry Edwards.

“It should be a great event.”

Taps Across America came to notoriety in 2020 after CBS reporter Steve Hartman featured the event as part of his “On the Road” series. Edwards happened to be watching the CBS Evening News that evening, and the Milledgeville version was born.
