Senior citizen charged with aggravated battery

A 64-year-old woman was booked at the county jail after attacking one of the other residents at Dogwood Retirement Apartments.

Deebra Annette Smith was charged with aggravated battery, which is a step up from aggravated assault. An assault reaches the level of aggravated battery when “serious disfiguring of the body occurs,” according to state law. In this instance, the victim “had a closed fracture to the mandible.”

A Milledgeville Police Department officer also noted that the victim’s “eye was swollen and had popped blood vessels causing it to appear read.”

Dogwood Retirement Apartments is the three-story building at the corner of West Hancock Street and South Columbia Street.

Smith said she initially became upset when the victim “was talking trash” about a man that Smith previously dated in 2017 and how “he no longer wanted her.” The argument escalated, and Smith claims that the victim ultimately grabbed her wig, which is when she decided to start swinging.
