The Milledgeville Garden Club’s choice for Garden of the Month for April is the lovely property of Harriett and Marion Nelson. At this time of year, the Native Azaleas, Dogwood and Japanese Maples are especially beautiful, and the air is thick with butterflies. Nestled among the towering pines, the home is surrounded by an amazing array of flowering shrubs, flowers and trees. Harriett, a retired biology teacher, is an accomplished hands-on gardener with seemingly tireless energy. She has used stones from the property as well as other sources to build walls to border the Southern Living inspired garden “rooms.” Stones and salvaged bricks were used to make walkways and small bridges throughout the area. Marion, who is retired from the Dept. of Natural Resources, has cleared trees and underbrush, hauled stones, and provided endless support, but he states clearly that this is Harriett’s garden. She says quietly that it has been her therapy.
