Following a comprehensive origin-and-cause investigation, a fire at a residence on Garrett Way that occurred early Monday morning has been classified as accidental, according to Baldwin County Fire Rescue chief Bradley Towe. Based on physical evidence, fire patterns, and investigative findings, the fire is believed to have originated in the back left bedroom of the single-family residence. The cause of the fire has been determined to be consistent with a lithiumion battery that experienced thermal runaway. Thermal runaway is a failure condition in which a lithium-ion battery cell overheats uncontrollably, causing a rapid increase in temperature and pressure that can result in fire, intense heat release, and in some cases, explosion.
