Last Friday marked the return of the food truck-and-flannel theme for Milledgeville Main Street’s First Friday event. The monthly event first hit the scene in 2011 and has grown over the years. Giving local businesses an opportunity to get involved in the community and gives locals a chance to see what Milledgeville has to offer. Each month offers something different and serves as a reflection of changes in the area as well. The food truck-and-flannel event is perfect for staying warm and sampling from local restaurants.
While the food trucks were the main attraction, this First Friday also featured ax throwing, metalworks, and handmade wood carvings. Both craft stations featured experts, who were making products on scene.
Amy Raburn, the community engagement pastor from North Rich Christian Church talked about the service they provide at First Friday.
“We believe that the church should be in the community, serving the community. Anytime there is stuff going on in Milledgeville, we try to support them. We believe in what Milledgeville Main Street is doing, which is just trying to get the community together. We help serve, but we also like being involved,” said Raburn.
Milledgeville Main Street is in charge of big community events in area, including the monthly First Fridays as well as the iconic local Deep Roots festival. Both events feature interchanging bands, venues, and restaurants. They not only bring in crowds but lend an economic boost to businesses.
Jennifer Stasney was born and raised in the area and has now assumed the role of Main Street director.
“I definitely have a lot to learn, but I’m excited for the opportunities. I do want to put my mark on Milledgeville and downtown, in any positive way. I don’t know exactly what that’s going to be yet, but I have a love for the area and these small businesses, so I want to see them thrive,” said Stasney.
Raburn also mentioned why she thinks First Friday draws the crowd that it does monthly.
“I think it’s just for the excitement of having things to do, having something for your family to come out and do. I think Our Milledgeville Main Street has just worked really hard, not only for Deep Roots, but just to have an event that is really relevant,” said Raburn.
The next First Friday will be on March 6, featuring a “Battle of the Bands” theme.
