Following their second bye week of the season, the Georgia Military College (GMC) Prep Bulldogs are heading to Wilkinson County this Friday to take on the Warriors. It’s a matchup that could determine who finishes second in GHSA A D2 Region 5 for the 2025 season.
GMC Prep (4-4, 3-0) is currently tied with Johnson County (8-0, 3-0) for first place in Region 5 while Wilkinson (2-6, 2,1) is ranked second. In order to clinch at least second place, the Bulldogs need a win over the Warriors, which also would give the Bulldogs a shot at Johnson, now seeking its fourth consecutive region title.
“We took some days off to rest and recover from the last four weeks,” GMC head coach Gavin Tierce said. “We had a lot of injuries that guys were playing through that needed some time to heal.
“We got started on Wilkinson County on Wednesday and got our gameplan installed,” he added. “Having three extra days of prep is a big deal for us going into this week.”
Despite Wilkinson’s poor overall record, they are 2-1 with their only loss in region play came at the hands of undefeated Johnson County last Friday.
Despite the Warriors’ record, Tierce said they still present many challenges for the Bulldogs to overcome.
“They (Wilkinson) do a lot of things very well, but the most impressive part of their team is their overall speed,” Tierce said. “They run a very impressive offense. Lots of formations, great perimeter runs, great passing concepts, and they scheme up some really explosive QB runs as well.
“The biggest test for our defense is going to be the ability to recognize, line up, and adjust to all their formations and tendencies,” he added.
Tierce also suggested the Bulldogs’ offense will have to sustain long, physical drives.
“We have done a great job of taking over games by staying on schedule offensively and being tough to get off the field,” he said.
The Bulldogs and Warriors will kick off in Irwinton at 7:30 p.m. Friday, with the final regular season game for GMC coming Oct. 31 versus Johnson County in Wrightsville.
