Chamber of Commerce hosts free fair to introduce nonprofits

The Milledgeville- Baldwin Chamber of Commerce will be hosting Serve Baldwin: A Non-Profit Fair Sept.

12 to help citizens learn more about the county’s and city’s nonprofit organizations.

“The need for this fair was brought to my attention by one of our Chamber ambassadors and board members,” said Kara Lassister, president and CEO of the Milledgeville- Baldwin Chamber of Commerce. “They are very involved with volunteering. Through their work, they had many people approach them wanting to know options of how to get involved and what is available.”

As of Aug. 28, The Salvation Army of Milledgeville, Communities In Schools Milledgeville/ Baldwin County, Civic Woman’s Club of Milledgeville, Overview, Inc., Habitat for Humanity Milledgeville-Baldwin County, Georgia College’s Learning in Retirement; Daughters Who Speak, Inc.; Family Hospice; Chard Wray Food Pantry; Kiwanis Club of Milledgeville, Inc.; Georgia’s Old Capital Heritage Center at The Depot, Inc.; and Lockerly Arboretum will be present at the fair to interact with the public.

Though, as of the newspaper’s deadline, registration was still open, and Lassiter hoped for more additions.

Each nonprofit organization will have a representative to speak to, volunteer opportunities, information on their goals and services to the community, and ways that the public can help support their organization.

“The goal of the fair is to allow nonprofit organizations to network with each other and the public, recruit volunteers, educate citizens and our local students on community organizations, and teach about the importance of volunteering and supporting our local nonprofits,” said Lassiter.

Serve Baldwin was held prior to COVID but is returning for the first time since shutdown, after requests from citizens looking to learn about volunteer opportunities.

“Volunteering gives back to the community but also teaches a variety of skills, depending on who you volunteer for and what your duties are. There are so many nonprofits that are involved in the city and county in different ways that are always in need of support and have many different ways to get involved,” said Lassiter. “I hope the nonprofits will be able to connect with volunteers that will assist them for a long time.”

Serve Baldwin will take place from 9-11 a.m. at the main office of the Baldwin County Recreation Department located at 59 Ga-22. This is a free event. Following the fair, a survey will be conducted to determine if the fair will become an ongoing event in the future.
