Alligator spotted on Vinson Highway; stay alert

>> GATOR SIGHTING

An alligator was sighted on Vinson Highway in Milledgeville near the Fall Line Freeway on the morning of May 15.

Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office deputies located the gator and maintained a safe perimeter until the Georgia Department of Natural Resources arrived.

There have been multiple reports of possible alligator sightings in Lake Sinclair and the Oconee River. While not common in this area, it is not impossible for the alligators to move into new waterways during warmer months.

Alligators are most active between dusk and dawn and can move quickly on land for short distances. Feeding of alligators is illegal and causes them to lose their natural fear of humans. If you see an alligator do not approach or feed it. Keep pets and children away from the animal and never attempt to move it or harass it. Reach out to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources for assistance.

“Thank you to the citizen who called this in and helped keep the public safe.

As always, we’re committed to keeping Baldwin County informed and protected. Stay safe and aware,” the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office posted to Facebook.
