Michael Crews has been a resident of Baldwin County since the summer of 2013. Crews and his wife made the move from Phoenix, Ariz., and have enjoyed the environment a small town creates versus living in a large city.
Crews works as a professor of film and television within the Mass Communication Department at Georgia College & State University. He teaches a range of topics that include feature film writing, elements of production design, and introductory media literacy courses.
“The teaching side is fun because it brings a sense of newness each year and semester. It’s connected to the other passions you have, so it creates a nice synthesis of things happening in the classroom. It’s nice to see the difference between groups of film students, and the passions each of them have. Being in my fourth year teaching at GCSU, it is the expected newness that keeps it exciting,” Crews said.
Having been raised in a college-centric town himself, Crews was familiar with what it would be like living in Milledgeville.
“Growing up in a college town that was similar in nature, I knew what I was getting into when moving here. The liveliness and youthful aspects that the college brings to Baldwin County is nice, and it gives more opportunities in a small town,” he said. “Whether it’s concerts or art exhibits, there are more things to do and experience. After living in Phoenix, it was a drastic change. Big cities have more variety, but being in a small town like Milledgeville, there are many unexpected perks.”
Crews enjoys and takes advantage of the recreational activities Baldwin County provides. His family enjoys spending time on Bartrum trail and on the Oconee River Greenway. Additionally, he appreciates residing in Milledgeville due to how quaint it feels.
“It’s a nice small town to be in, and it feels like it is tucked away from the chaos. You’re never too far from major cities here, but the feeling of a small town is pleasant,” Crews said.
