Georgia Military College Preparatory School’s men’s and women’s varsity basketball teams hosted Twiggs County High School at home on Friday, Jan. 31. Both teams faced a tough matchup, with the women's team taking a 29-26 victory and the men's team losing 68-43.
The women’s varsity basketball team narrowly overcame the Twiggs County Cobras with a late comeback, scoring 14 points in the fourth quarter. Before the final period, they scored four points in the first quarter, six in the second, and five in the third.
With the recent victory, they are 1-16 overall for the 2024-2025 season and 1-7 in the 1A D2 region five conference.
Nolan Baugh, the assistant basketball coach for the women’s varsity team believes his players have significantly improved since the beginning of the season.
“They absolutely went out there and earned it,” Baugh said. “They played hard from the second until the ball was tipped off until the final buzzer.”
Baugh believes the victory was a “team effort” and credits his players’ positive attitudes for helping them take the victory.
'Their effort and attitude to stay in the game when we were down, their attitude to stay positive and keep playing hard, is why we finished on top,' said Baugh. “They kept going, and they didn't stop.”
With Friday’s games, the 29 points scored were a joint effort from eight of the 10 athletes on the floor. Sophomore Allie Deason led the team with nine points, and freshman Bella came in second with six points.
Baugh believes the game was “just the fruit of all those days of working” and hopes to end the season on a good note.
'We've had a tough season, and our whole goal is to develop and get better every day,' he said. “We must keep this momentum going and come out and play hard.”
With their 68-43 loss on Friday night, the men’s team scored 13 points in the first quarter, seven in the second, 12 in the third, and the remaining 11 were added in the fourth. The team is now 0-19 overall and 0-8 in the 1a D2 Region 5 conference and had two remaining games set after their match against Twiggs County.
Head Coach Shawn Dennis believes that multiple mistakes on the offensive end led to the team’s loss.
“We had folks in the wrong spots, and like I told them, it's basketball; it's too few people on the court to have one person messing up the offense,being in the wrong spot, and just messing with the flow for everybody,” Dennis said. “We’ve got to get on the same page offensively, but I think defensively we're fine.”
GMC Preparatory Schools Varsity Basketball teams conclude their regular season against Johnson County High School this week. The women’s team had their matchup at home on Wednesday, Feb. 5, and the men’s team will play away on Saturday, Feb. 8.
