Milledgeville Baldwin County Allied Arts is hosting an “I Love Georgia” Plein Air Event this summer to allow artists to travel and showcase what they love about our home state.
Allied Arts hosted their first Plein Air Event in March at Lockerly Auditorium, where participants had four hours to paint something on the Lockerly grounds. Due to high interest from that event, Allied Arts is opening the summer Plein Air to allow participants to travel around the state and experience the culture, environment, and wonders of Georgia that they can memorialize in their art and bring home.
“We’ve observed other art organizations hosting Plein Air events in a variety of ways,” said Rebekah Tobar, executive director of Allied Arts. “During the summer, people are traveling, taking short trips, and generally enjoying their environment and surroundings more. We wanted to accommodate our event to that and allow artists to bring those experiences back to Milledgeville.”
For this event, artists are responsible for their own art supplies. Allied Arts will not be providing supplies for this event.
Mediums (canvases, sketchpad pages, et cetera) will need to be stamped by Allied Arts by Monday, July 22 at 3 p.m. Artists may submit up to three pieces, but cannot begin any of their pieces before July 22 at noon.
“We want artists to consider what they love about Georgia and create a visual that will tell a viewer something about our state.
Show us your favorite place to go, thing to do, or something else entirely,” said Kristin Allen, program director for Allied Arts.
Artwork will need to be turned in by Friday, July 26 at noon. Artwork must be labeled with the artist's name, title of piece, category, media type, and (if you would like to try and sell your artwork) sale price. If not for sale, add NFS to the label. Artwork must be framed and wired for hanging prior to drop off.
“Artwork submitted for the event will be exhibited at The Marlor House alongside Robert Jorns' exhibit from Aug. 2-22,” said Tobar. “Judging for the contest part of the event will take place Aug.
1 and the winners will be announced at the opening reception.”
The opening reception will be on Aug. 2 from 5-7 p.m. The first place winner of the contest will receive $125, second palace $100, and third place $75. The cost to participate is $25. To register, visit milledgevillealliedarts. com.
