The John Milledge Academy (JMA) Trojans baseball team came away with a win and a loss last week against rival Tattnall Square Academy (TSA) of Macon.
In game one on Monday versus the visiting Trojans, JMA came away victorious, beating TSA 7-4. In game two on Wednesday in Macon, TSA won convincingly, scoring 11 runs over JMA’s solo crossing of the plate. The week put JMA’s record at 4-6 for the season and 2-4 in region play.
This week, the Trojans have a break between games before traveling to St. Simons Island this weekend to play in the annual Frederica Academy round-robin tournament.
JMA is set to play Terrell Academy (11-1) Friday afternoon in game one at Frederica Academy, followed by an evening game against Valwood. They will finish pre-scheduled games early Saturday afternoon versus Southland Academy.
Terrell, out of Dawson, has one of the best teams in the GIAA, having scored 70 runs while allowing just 24 against in 12 games this season.
The Eagles’ leading hitters include Quindon Wright, who’s batting .481 with four stolen bases, 13 hits, and 16 RBIs, and Daylor Drawdy, with a .480 batting percentage, 12 runs scored, and 12 hits.
Terrell’s top pitcher is Tyler Loewe, with a 1.62 ERA in five appearances this season. Loewe has struck out 20 batters and allowed just six runs; however, he’s been charged with 18 walks on the season.
For JMA, its top pitchers have been Remington Weaver and David Todd.
Weaver has a 3-2 record so far this season, with a 3.50 ERA and 21 runs allowed, with 13 strikeouts. He also has struggled with walks, with 13 batters taking a free base so far. However, Weaver has been consistently strong with the glove, forcing outs with 108 balls fielded this season.
Todd has been JMA’s top strikeout getter with 19 Ks so far in five appearances. Todd currently has a 4.20 ERA, with just 12 runs and 14 hits allowed.
At the plate, the Trojans have seen their top three seniors enjoy solid seasons so far.
Blake Bellflower has seen a lot of walks with a team-best 11 bases on balls. Though he has only seven hits this season, Bellflower also has driven home 11 runs and scored 10 himself.
Cooper Wilburn has done very well as the team’s best power hitter in 2024. Wilburn has two home runs, nine hits, 12 RBIs, and 10 runs scored this season.
Bud Veal leads the Trojans clubhouse in hits with 11. He also has scored 11 runs and is tied with Wilburn for the team lead in stolen bases at seven, while Bryce McDonel has five steals so far in 2024.
Meanwhile, junior Will Adams leads the Trojans in plate success with a .385 batting average, and with 10 hits he joins Veal as the only other Trojan with double-digit hits so far this season. Wilburn and Veal each have a .333 average at this point.
Following the Frederica Academy tournament, JMA will return home to play Heritage High School out of Newnan at 4 p.m. on Monday.
