The John Milledge Academy (JMA) boys’ basketball team wrapped up its region championship tournament going 1-1 after losing to Tatnall Square 55-50 in the first round and then beating Mount de Sales in a nail-biter by just one point.
The Trojans beat the Cavaliers 53-52 to wrap up their region tournament run and now turn their sights to the GIAA Triple-A playoffs.
JMA started in a hole, trailing Mount de Sales 13-8 in the first quarter, but was able to fight its way back into the game in the second quarter by outscoring the Cavs 14-12 and trailing by only three points (25-22) going into halftime.
The Trojans finished the third quarter still trailing the Cavaliers 40-39, but the fourth would ultimately be the deciding quarter as JMA took the 53-52 win to advance.
The win also allowed JMA to head into the first round of state playoffs at home in Milledgeville, where it will host Terrell Academy. The Terrell Academy Eagles are 11-12 this season and struggled in their region, giving the Trojans an upper hand in the matchup, along with home-court advantage.
JMA plays Terrell Academy on Feb. 21 (after press time), with the second round of the playoffs to be played at First Presbyterian Day School in Macon.
