John Milledge Academy returned to action this past Friday when it faced the George Walton Academy Bulldogs in Monroe.
With a 34-7 victory over the Bulldogs, the Trojans improved to 3-0 on the season and boosted the school’s overall undefeated streak to 53 games dating back to the 2019 season.
JMA got off to a hot start with quarterback Kolt McMichael connecting with Solomon Burney for a 20-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter that gave the Trojans an early 7-0 lead.
JMA’s defense then held the Bulldogs to a short drive before forcing them to punt on their first possession. The Trojans would turn to Javian Butts for a 78-yard rushing touchdown, leading to a JMA 14-0 advantage as the first quarter ended.
In the second quarter, George Walton answered with a long drive capped off by a one-yard rushing touchdown to cut JMA’s lead in half. That one-score lead didn’t last long, though, as Javian Butts scored his second touchdown of the night with a 12-yard rush that boosted JMA's advantage to 21-7.
Both teams exchanged punts near the end of the second quarter before the Bulldogs picked off a Trojans pass but were unable to convert before halftime.
To start the third quarter, George Walton drove down to the Trojans’ 20-yard line, where it attempted and missed a 30-yard field goal.
McMichael then connected with Bud Veal for a seven-yard touchdown pass that gave the Trojans their biggest lead of the night at 27-7 after the point-after kick missed.
By this time George Walton had essentially entered desperation mode and attempted an offensive play on fourth down that came up short and turned the ball over on downs to the Trojans.
To start the fourth quarter and finish the night for JMA, McMichael again connected with Burney, and again for a touchdown with a 10-yard pass that gave JMA a 34-7 lead and sealed the victory for the Trojans.
JMA will travel to St. Simons Island this Friday to play Frederica Academy.
