The Milledgeville City Council read a proclamation designating March 21 as Georgia Peach Pit Chapter Day to honor the Northrop Grumman Retiree Club’s service to the community as it celebrates its 35th anniversary.
The Georgia/Peach Pit Chapter of the Grumman Retiree Club, Inc., was created in January 1988 when the requisite 25 retirees/ pension-eligible employees in Plant 66 petitioned for membership. In March of that year, the national club approved the request.
“This club is organized to promote and enhance charitable, scholastic, and philanthropic activities for the community and on a national basis through its chapters located throughout the nation,” Chapter Secretary Lew M. Luliucci wrote in an email to The Baldwin Bulletin. “Accordingly, this club is treated as a public charity. Gift checks issued to meet the club objective are complemented both by volunteerism CONTINUED FROM>> A1
and individual member’s income spent for goods, services and taxes, which also helps the economies where the money is spent.”
According to Luliucci, starting in June 1975, when Grumman Plant 66 in Milledgeville was built, plant management spent money on charities, educational endeavors, goods, and services while the employees spent their income on goods, services, taxes, charities and volunteerism. The annual economic impact of the Grumman and Northrop Grumman presence was significant, as calculated by GCSU.
And the Grumman Plant continues operations today, continuing that impact on present times.
“Whereas, the Grumman Company opened a Plant in Milledgeville/Baldwin County and brought aerospace jobs into the community starting in 1975, and continues to have a significant economic impact to this day,” Milledgeville Mayor Mary Parham-Copelan read from the proclamation.
“Whereas, renamed in 1995, Northrop Grumman and its employees provide community service to include volunteerism and financial gifts to causes …Therefore, I, Mary Parham-Copelan, as Mayor of the City of Milledgeville, do hereby proclaim Tuesday, March 21, 2023, as Georgia Peach Pit Chapter Day.”
After reading the proclamation, Parham-Copelan shook hands with two members of the Georgia/Peach Pit Chapter of the Grumman Retiree Club and presented them with the framed proclamation.
“It’s awesome to help them celebrate 35 years and I thank everyone for being here to celebrate,” said Parham-Copelan to the audience.
Following the proclamation, the council had one item on the agenda; a resolution to authorize Mayor Parham-Copelan to sign a letter of agreement with C2i Control Instruments, Inc. This letter agrees to proceed with upgrades to the water treatment plant and wastewater treatment supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. The resolution was unanimously approved.
The next city council meeting will be March 28 at 6:30 p.m.
