Georgia College & State University was ranked No. 7 for Top Public Universities in the South and No. 22 for Best Regional Universities in the South in the 20222023 Best Colleges rankings by U.S. News & World Report.

U.S. News & World Report is a multi-platform publisher of news and information. It is known for its authoritative rankings of Best Colleges, Best Graduate Schools and Best Hospitals.

According to “How U.S.

News Calculated the 2022-2023 Best Colleges Rankings” article, the ranking is now in its 38th year and assessed 1,500 U.S. bachelor’s degreegranting institutions on 17 measures of academic quality.

“We calculated 10 distinct overall rankings where colleges and universities were grouped by their academic missions. For each ranking, the sum of weighted, normalized values across 17 indicators of academic quality determine each school’s overall score and, by extension, its overall rank,” states the article.

Beyond its overall rankings, GCSU tied for No. 8 in Most Innovative Schools and No. 12 in Best Undergraduate Teaching.

Most Innovative Schools are ranked based on making the innovative improvements in curriculum, faculty, students, campus life, technology or facilities. Best Undergraduate teaching is determined based on “a strong commitment to teaching undergraduates instead of conducting graduate-level research.”

GCSU online graduate programs exceeded as well. Their nursing program ranked 24th nationwide and was the highest ranked program in Georgia. In addition, the university’s Family Nurse Practitioner program ranked No. 13.

It is the only program in Georgia to appear on the list for that specialty.

“We are delighted at the further validation of our efforts to provide the highest quality graduate education to help prepare our students for careers in high demand fields,” said Cathy Cox, GCSU president in a press release.

“Our dedicated faculty continue to find innovative ways of delivering the quality education we are known for in an online environment.”

Overall GCSU was ranked No. 53 in Best Value Universities in the South. The calculation was determined based on the college’s academic quality, as indicated by its 2022-2023 U.S. News Best Colleges ranking, and the 2021-2022 net cost of attendance for an out-of-state student who received the average level of need-based financial aid. Out of the Georgia schools in this category, it ranked second under Berry College.
