Project for homeless veterans moves quickly

A new tiny homes community for homeless veterans is moving along at a relatively fast pace.

A land contract recently was finalized between the Central State Hospital Local Redevelopment Authority and Mighty Hero Home Foundation Inc., a non-profit group.

The Mighty Hero Homes Project will sit along 20 acres of land on Bypass Road, located between the Georgia War Veterans Home and the Central State Powell Building.

The project cost is $20 million, and the plan is to construct 84 tiny homes, along with other amenities, including a 6,000-square-foot clubhouse.

The plan is to break ground this fall. The project will rely heavily on housing vouchers from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The General Assembly also recently included $7.5 million in its budget for “ending veteran homelessness.”

This will be the first Mighty Hero Homes project, and the plan is to eventually build 37,000 tiny homes across the country.
