Milledgeville Main Street welcomes event coordinator

Milledgeville Main Street hired LaRue Wooten as its new event coordinator. Milledgeville Main Street hosts First Fridays, Deep Roots, and many other events in downtown Milledgeville.

Wooten is originally from Macon but moved to Milledgeville to live in her great-grandparent’s home and assist in caring for her grandmother and mother. When living in Macon, Wooten worked for the Jones County Board of Education. Based on her experience, Wooten is used to multitasking, working with a wide range of age groups and people and has worked as a manager, and handled both office and computer work.

“There are a lot of things I did when working with the Board of Education that are similar to this job. I started out as a cafeteria worker then became manager of the cafeteria and I eventually moved to the front office as a bookkeeper,” said Wooten. “That work has prepared me in several capacities to take over this position.”

Wooten has been involved with Milledgeville and its downtown events as a volunteer and attendee. She built a connection with Milledgeville Main Street Executive Director Carlee Schulte that encouraged her to take the job and make the transition.

“I have volunteered with Milledgeville Main Street for Deep Roots and their Most Valued Person program for about seven years so, when the job became available, it felt like the right thing to do,” said Wooten. “Carlee and I have a good relationship and I’m excited to be working with her.”

As event coordinator, Wooten will assist in scheduling and planning events, coordinating with vendors and sponsors, running social media pages, and promoting events, projects, and more.

“I worked with social media and directly with people during my time with the board of education. However, I will be taking on a more active role now to ensure that people are informed about what is happening in Milledgeville, what new businesses are coming, what current businesses are doing, and much more alongside coordinating things behind the scenes,” said Wooten.

Wooten is looking forward to being more involved with downtown, being able to be intricately involved with its events, and interacting with the community.

“Before I started this job, I’ve always loved all the people, the gatherings, what was happening downtown and I’m excited to have an active part in both the planning and implementation of that,” said Wooten. “These events are good things for people to do.”

Schultee and Wooten run Milledgeville Main Street as a two-person team and will strive together to encourage economic development and a sense of community in the heart of Milledgeville. To learn more about Milledgeville Main Street visit milledgevillemainstreet. com.
