Council approves amendment for microbreweries and wine shops

>> MILLEDGEVILLE CITY COUNCIL

The Milledgeville City Council met Sept. 23 to approve the new articles entitled “Microbreweries and Brewpubs” and “Wine Shops in Central Business District” discussed at the first meeting of the month.

“It’s an exciting ordinance for the city and we look forward to issuing the license for these,” said City Manager Hank Griffeth.

It is an amendment to provide an article to create microbreweries, brew pubs, and wine shops in the central business district. For all three types of businesses, there is a requirement for the number of days and minimum number of hours for when they will be open to prohibit them from opening only on the weekends.

There is also a limit to three microbreweries, including brew pubs, and two wine shops allowed in the district at a time. No gambling or gaming is allowed in these establishments. None of these shops can sell alternative nicotine products.

It was unanimously approved.

The council also discussed two storm water projects. The first was a resolution to authorize an agreement with Simonton Engineering for a draining pipe project at Oak Circle. The second was a resolution to authorize a stormwater drainage easement across portions of property owned by Pamela Johnson located at 2269 Leo Court.

“This is to finish the projects that were worked on by Peach State Construction for the last year and a half that did not work out as it should,” said Griffeth referring to the easement. “The engineer and I anticipate that this will remediate the situation there.”

The resolutions were unanimously approved. In other news, Douglas Pendergast, on behalf of BYFBO, LLC-DBA, was announced to have reacquired Buffington’s located at 120 W. Hancock St. The council approved him for a Beer, Wine, and Liquor-Consumption on Premises application.

Kerry Allen was also appointed to the Library Board.

The next city council meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 8 inside the council chambers on 119 East Hancock St.
